Softball picks up much needed wins

The Doane Tiger softball team (13-27 overall) took advantage of crowd support garnered from the Doane Day at the Ballpark as they topped Dordt twice with solid play.
Free t-shirts, pop, chips and Subway sandwiches brought out a cheerful crowd already anticipating the not quite official advent of Stop Day for the day after.
The women’s team played off the boisterous energy of their 50 plus supporters and won their first game 3-2.
Sophomore third baseman Tiffany Cunningham went three for three on the day with an RBI and a run scored to help sophomore pitcher Alli Sperry attain the victory.
“I had great defense behind me,” Sperry said. “The offense really came out too in the game.”
The crowds began to break up before the second game of the night as students went back to their dorms to warm up for the Stop Day festivities.
The Tigers didn’t let this faze them as they followed suit and simply picked up the pace, run-ruling Dordt in five innings, 10-2.
Eight different Tigers scored runs to give Sperry her second win of the night, improving her record to 9-14.
The Tiger’s next game is 5 p.m. today against Concordia University in Seward.
“We really needed the two wins,” Sperry said. “Hopefully we can put it together against Concordia to make the GPAC tournament.”

Tiger softball looks to turn season around

Doane’s softball team won one Great Plains Athletic Conference game and two in the Morningside Spring Invite Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa, last weekend.
“In the tournament Saturday we really came together as a team for once,” senior co-captain Brook Ruhter said.
In their conference game Thursday the Tigers played at Mount Marty College in Yankton, S.D., where they split, winning one 4-1 and losing the other 3-2. In the Morningside Invite, the team lost all three games played on Friday. The Tigers’ luck turned around Saturday as they won both tournament games. The team defeated Johnson & Wales 18-0 as sophomore pitcher Sara Engleman threw a perfect game, and defeated William Penn 3-1.
“Although we could’ve done better, it’s still an improvement,” freshman Tiffani Aschoff said. “At first it was hard to start the season off with new coaches, but that doesn’t matter any more because we’re sick of losing.”
With hopes of winning more this season, the Tigers plan on learning from their mistakes.
“They must feel comfortable with their positions and as a team to win,” head coach Barry Mosley said. “We have to be patient and do what’s best for the team.”
The wins improve the Tigers to 6-15 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Softball struggles over break, on six game skid

After a rough Spring Break trip, going 2-4, the Tigers softball team (3-12 overall, 0-2 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference) is ready to turn its fortune around in the upcoming conference games.
“We need to come together now that we’ve reached conference play,” senior co-captain Brooke Ruhter said. “We need to win this coming weekend.”
The Tigers finished their trip by playing last year’s National Champions Simon Fraser University (NAIA #1) and the University of Chicago. Although they lost to both teams Ruhter was positive about the team’s performance.
“We played the defending National Champions and although they scored a lot in the beginning of the game we came together better at the end,” Ruhter said.
The Tigers played their first two conference games at Nebraska Wesleyan University Tuesday. They lost both games with scores of 5-2 and 3-1. The Tigers’ next game is at Mount Marty College at 5 p.m. today in Yankton, S.D.

The Tiger softball team dropped two tough games in their season opening doubleheader against York College.
The score was close throughout the first game. The teams were tied heading into the sixth inning, but the York Panthers scored one more run in the inning to edge out the Tigers 6-5.
“For the first game of the year, I thought we played well,” junior Brooke Staehr said. “Obviously, we still have some things to work on.”
Despite a late run by Doane, York used a big fourth inning to collect five hits and six runs to win the second game 11-5. The Tigers had a tough time bringing in their teammates, leaving eight runners on base.
“We did a lot of good things, but we had some let downs that really hurt us”, junior Jenni Allder said. “These two games showed us what we have to work on for the rest of our season.”
The Tigers (0-2) will look to bounce back from a sluggish start as they play again at 11 a.m. on March 12 in the Bronco Invitational at Hastings.

Softball gets ready

With a new coach and a fresh season ahead, the Doane Tigers softball team is looking forward to a successful season.
“I think we’re going to be a highly competitive team,” said Barry Mosley, head coach.
Mosley, who joined the softball program in May 2003, said that he thinks that the team will make a better showing this year than in the past. Last year, the team missed playing in the Great Plains Athletic Conference Tournament tournament by one game after finishing the season 11-19 overall and 9-13 in the GPAC.
Mosley said that his goal for the team this year is to place fifth in the GPAC. Doane was voted eighth out of 13 teams in the conference in a preseason vote.The team has chosen seniors Brook Ruhter, Megan McKown and Kate Reeson as its captains.
Ruhter feels the team seems to be coming together as a group.
“We really feel like a team this year, more so than in past years,” Ruhter said.
She said that the team will especially miss Monica Smith, last year’s starting pitcher who graduated last May. Smith was named GPAC and NAIA Pitcher of the Week for her performance in California during Spring Break last season. She was also the 2002 GPAC pitcher of the year.
The Tigers will also look to replace Lissa Hagemann who also graduated in May. Hagemann graduated holding five Doane softball records including most career hits and most stolen bases.
Mosley said that he is waiting until after this week’s practices to choose a starting line-up. The team is ready to begin practicing outside, but is waiting for the city of Crete’s permission to practice at Tuxedo Park. Until then, they are practicing in Fuhrer Field House. Whether or not the team will get to play a game before the Spring Break break trip to Tucson, Ariz., depends on the weather.
Mosley said that the team is going to take this season one game at a time.
“We’ll grow from each game, winning or losing,” he said.The softball team’s first scheduled game is against York College at 5 p.m. March 9 in Tuxedo Park.
